Per “cibo per l’infanzia” l’Unione Europea intende tutti gli alimenti destinati a lattanti e bambini piccoli, quindi prodotti formulati apposta per coprire i fabbisogni nutrizionali dalla nascita fino ai primi anni di vita.
Il cibo per l’infanzia va da 0 a 3 anni?
Sì. Le normative europee (Reg. UE 609/2013) definiscono “prima infanzia” il periodo che va fino ai 36 mesi di età. Dopo i 3 anni i bambini rientrano nell’alimentazione “generale”, anche se con raccomandazioni di prudenza (meno zuccheri, meno sale, più freschezza).
Rientrano:
Formule per lattanti (infant formula): sostituti del latte materno, da 0 a 6 mesi.
Formule di proseguimento (follow-on formula): per bambini dai 6 ai 12 mesi.
Alimenti a base di cereali e altri baby food: pappe, creme, omogeneizzati di carne, pesce, frutta e verdura, snack specifici, destinati a bambini da 6 mesi fino ai 3 anni.
Alimenti dietetici speciali: prodotti per esigenze mediche particolari.
Cibo per l’infanzia: quando la chimica sparisce dall’etichetta (ma non dal piatto)
Il marketing ci racconta che i prodotti “per bambini” sono i più sicuri, i più controllati, i più “puri”.
Vasetti con l’omino sorridente, confezioni dai colori pastello, fruttini che promettono naturalezza assoluta.
Eppure, se guardiamo davvero alle norme europee, scopriamo che la lista degli additivi vietati nei baby food è lunga.
In cosa consiste la legge (Reg.) 1333/2008?
Il Regolamento (CE) n. 1333/2008 disciplina l’uso degli additivi negli alimenti in tutta l’Unione Europea.
Punti chiave:
Lista positiva: solo gli additivi esplicitamente autorizzati possono essere usati, negli alimenti e nelle dosi indicate.
Principio di precauzione: ogni additivo deve essere valutato dall’EFSA (Autorità Europea per la Sicurezza Alimentare) prima di essere ammesso.
Categorie di alimenti: elenca gli additivi permessi per ogni tipologia (bevande, dolci, pane, baby food…).
Regole speciali per i baby food: restrizioni molto più severe rispetto agli alimenti per adulti.
Etichettatura: obbligo di riportare il nome o il codice “E” in etichetta, con avvertenze obbligatorie per alcuni coloranti (“può influire negativamente su attività e attenzione dei bambini”).
Revisioni periodiche: la lista viene aggiornata in base a nuove evidenze scientifiche: se un additivo non è più sicuro, viene ridotto o eliminato.
In parole semplici: è la legge europea che decide quali additivi sono permessi e in quali cibi, proteggendo in particolare i neonati e i bambini piccoli.
Eppure, fuori dal mondo patinato dei baby food, gli stessi additivi circolano liberamente nei prodotti destinati agli adulti. Merendine, succhi, snack salati: scaffali pieni di sostanze che all’EFSA suonano come “da evitare sotto i 3 anni”, ma che magicamente tornano “sicure” a 4 anni e un giorno.
Nitriti e nitrati, quelli che danno al prosciutto il suo bel rosa, sono stati banditi: nei bambini aumentano il rischio di metemoglobinemia e, più avanti, di tumori. I coloranti sintetici – giallo tramonto, rosso allura, tartrazina – sono vietati perché legati a iperattività e disturbi dell’attenzione. I dolcificanti “light”, dall’aspartame al sucralosio, non hanno cittadinanza nei prodotti per l’infanzia: un fegato immaturo non è un laboratorio chimico.
La verità è che la lista dei divieti è già di per sé una confessione. Una confessione del fatto che l’industria alimentare ha spinto troppo, ha “dopato” il cibo per renderlo più bello, più dolce, più stabile. E che solo quando si parla di bambini – quei consumatori troppo fragili per reggere il peso delle bugie – si è stati costretti a togliere il piede dall’acceleratore.

Molti di questi additivi non dovrebbero trovarsi nei baby food regolamentati in UE (grazie al Reg. 1333/2008), ma possono comparire in prodotti “parababy” (snack o dolci industriali venduti ai bambini ma non classificati come alimenti per la prima infanzia). Il consumatore deve imparare a leggere le etichette: se compaiono nomi come “E102”, “E211” o “E250”, meglio non metterli nel carrello.

Non agiscono direttamente come antibiotici, ma in associazione ad altri additivi peggiorano la disbiosi e sono stati collegati a iperattività.
Glutammato (E621)
Snack salati, patatine aromatizzate
Può influenzare metabolismo batterico e, indirettamente, il sistema nervoso centrale (asse intestino-cervello).
Il microbiota intestinale è l’insieme dei microrganismi che vivono nell’intestino. Nei bambini piccoli è ancora in formazione: qualunque squilibrio (“disbiosi”) può avere effetti sul sistema immunitario, sul metabolismo e perfino sullo sviluppo neurologico.
E allora, caro consumatore adulto: perché dovresti tollerare nel tuo piatto ciò che non accetteresti mai nel biberon di tuo figlio?
Mangiare bene non è moda, è autodifesa. Leggere l’etichetta non è fissazione, è atto politico.
Perché se un additivo è vietato ai bambini… forse non fa bene nemmeno a te.
