Cortile della scuola, durante l’intervallo. È il primo giorno di ritorno a scuola dopo una settimana di assenza per un flare della PANS. Nancy è in disparte, vicino al muro, e controlla ossessivamente i bottoni del suo giubbotto. Gli altri bambini giocano più lontano.
ZOE:
(si avvicina di corsa, poi rallenta vedendo l’espressione di Nancy) Ciao, Nan! Finalmente sei tornata! Mi sei mancata tantissimo.
NANCY:
(alza lo sguardo, veloce, poi lo riabbassa sui bottoni) Ciao, Zoe. Io… non posso venire a giocare. Devo finire.
Zoe si accuccia vicino a lei, senza toccarla. Nancy continua a controllare i bottoni, uno per uno.
NANCY:
Sì. So che è stupido. Ma la Voce nella mia testa dice che se non sono tutti perfetti, succederà qualcosa di brutto a mia mamma. Lo so che non è vero, ma ho troppa paura.
ZOE:
Non è stupido. È la tua PANS. È come un virus informatico che ti impalla, vero? Come quando il mio tablet si blocca su una pubblicità e non riesco più a chiuderla.
Nancy fa un cenno di sì, un piccolo sorriso tra le lacrime. La metafora di Zoe è sempre così precisa.
ZOE:
Okay. Allora noi dobbiamo fare “Ctrl+Alt+Del” al tuo cervello. Come fa mio papà col computer.
NANCY:
Come si fa?
ZOE:
Primo: Ctrl. Vuol dire Controllo. Ma non il tuo controllo. Il nostro controllo. Ti do io il controllo. Dammi la mano.
Zoe tende la mano, palmo verso l’alto. Nancy esita, poi smette di toccare i bottoni e le appoggia la sua mano.
ZOE:
Secondo: Alt. Significa Alternativa. Invece di stare qui con i bottoni, facciamo un’altra cosa. Una cosa sicura. Andiamo in bagno? O dalla maestra? O ci sediamo su quella panchina? Tu scegli.
NANCY:
(stringe la mano di Zoe, ancorandosi a lei) La panchina. Ma lontano da tutti.
ZOE:
Perfetto. Terzo: Del. Come Delete, cancella. Ma non si può cancellare la PANS, lo so. Però possiamo cancellare la paura per un po’. Come? Con la nostra canzone stupida.
Zoe inizia a canticchiare piano la sigla di un cartone che adoravano da piccole, una canzone così sciocca che di solito le fa ridere. Nancy ascolta, ancora tesa.
ZOE:
(sussurra) Nan, i bottoni sono al loro posto. La mamma sta bene. Sei al sicuro. Sono qui con te. Respira con me.
Nancy chiude gli occhi e fa un respiro profondo, seguendo il ritmo della canzone. La sua presa sulla mano di Zoe si allenta un po’.
NANCY:
Zoe?
ZOE:
Sì?
NANCY:
Come fai a sapere sempre cosa fare? Come fai a non aver paura di me quando sono così?
ZOE:
Perché tu non mi fai paura. Mi fa paura vedere che stai male. E tu non sei “così”. Tu sei Nancy. La Nancy che sa i nomi di tutti i cavalli del maneggio, che mi aiuta in matematica e che ride fino a soffocare quando faccio le voci dei cartoni. Quella sei tu.
ZOE:
La PANS è solo un’app che si è aperta per sbaglio e che non vuole chiudersi. Ma tu non sei la tua app bloccata. Sei il mio tablet preferito.
NANCY:
Grazie. Di essere la mia amica. Di essere la mia… Ctrl+Alt+Del.
ZOE:
Sempre. Ora, andiamo a sederci sulla panchina. E se la Voce torna a parlare, tu parlaci più forte tu, con me. Le nostre voci insieme sono più forti.
