Articolo 2 – Perché nasce l’euro digitale?
L’euro digitale non è solo una novità tecnologica: è una risposta strategica a cambiamenti globali, nuove abitudini di pagamento e sfide economiche. In questo secondo articolo di Digitale ma Reale scopriamo perché la BCE ha deciso di creare una versione digitale dell’euro e cosa c’è dietro questa scelta.
🧭 Le motivazioni principali
1. 📉 Calo dell’uso del contante
Sempre più persone pagano con carte, app e smartphone. In alcuni paesi europei, il contante è usato da una minoranza della popolazione. L’euro digitale nasce anche per garantire che, in un mondo sempre più digitale, esista una moneta pubblica, sicura e accessibile a tutti.
2. 🏦 Sovranità monetaria
Oggi molti pagamenti digitali passano da circuiti privati come Visa, Mastercard o PayPal. Con l’euro digitale, l’Europa vuole rafforzare il controllo pubblico sui sistemi di pagamento, riducendo la dipendenza da infrastrutture estere e proteggendo la propria autonomia finanziaria.
3. 🌍 Competizione globale
Altri paesi stanno sviluppando le proprie valute digitali: la Cina con lo yuan digitale, gli Stati Uniti con studi sul dollaro digitale e molti altri progetti in corso. L’Europa non vuole restare indietro e desidera difendere e rafforzare il ruolo internazionale dell’euro.
4. 🧑💻 Inclusione finanziaria
L’euro digitale potrebbe offrire accesso ai pagamenti digitali anche a chi oggi non ha un conto bancario, attraverso wallet pubblici o app semplificate. È uno strumento potenziale di inclusione finanziaria, soprattutto per le fasce più fragili.
5. 🔐 Sicurezza e resilienza
Un’infrastruttura digitale gestita dalla BCE può risultare più sicura, trasparente e resistente rispetto a soluzioni totalmente private. L’obiettivo è garantire la continuità dei pagamenti anche in situazioni di crisi, problemi tecnici o blackout di alcuni operatori.

L’euro digitale nasce per difendere il valore e il ruolo dell’euro in un mondo che cambia. È una scelta di autonomia, innovazione e accessibilità. Ma come ogni grande trasformazione, richiede informazione, confronto e consapevolezza: non basta introdurre una nuova tecnologia, bisogna farlo in modo equilibrato, trasparente e al servizio dei cittadini.
