L’Associated Press riporta che attorno alle 3 del mattino, i soldati israeliani avrebbero intimato alla folla di disperdersi e tornare più tardi. Subito dopo sarebbero partiti i colpi d’arma da fuoco, a circa un chilometro dal punto di raccolta.
La Mezzaluna Rossa Palestinese ha comunicato di aver trasportato 23 vittime e 23 feriti dalla zona di distribuzione a Rafah, oltre ad aver soccorso 14 persone ferite e recuperato un altro corpo in un’area vicina al corridoio di Netzarim. Il direttore sanitario degli ospedali di Gaza, Mohammed Zagout, ha dichiarato alla NBC che i corpi provenienti da Rafah presentavano ferite causate da proiettili sparati direttamente alla testa, al torace e all’addome.
