Capitolo 1 — Cos’è il PIL
Conti e Racconti, mattone su mattone,
per capire i numeri senza confusione.
Il PIL racconta solo una parte della storia,
ma senza capirlo, si perde la memoria.
1) Cos’è il PIL
Il PIL (Prodotto Interno Lordo) è probabilmente il numero economico più citato e meno compreso. Detto nel modo più semplice possibile, il PIL misura quanto valore economico viene prodotto all’interno di un Paese in un certo periodo di tempo, di solito un anno.
In due righe:
- Misura il valore monetario di beni e servizi finali prodotti nel Paese.
- Non misura felicità, benessere, qualità della vita.
2) Cosa entra nel PIL
Per capire cosa “fa numero”, bisogna sapere cosa viene sommato nel conto del PIL. In modo semplice, il PIL mette insieme le grandi componenti della domanda finale.
1️⃣ Consumi (in Italia)
Sono tutte le spese per uso finale effettuate in Italia: cibo, vestiti, affitti, viaggi, cure mediche, spettacoli, servizi vari.
2️⃣ Investimenti (delle imprese)
Sono spese che servono a produrre di più domani: fabbriche, macchinari, software, impianti, e anche l’accumulo di scorte. Non sono “consumi”: sono costruzione di capacità produttiva.
3️⃣ Servizi pubblici
Lo Stato produce servizi (scuola, sanità, trasporti, amministrazione, sicurezza…). Nei conti del PIL questi servizi vengono valutati in base ai costi necessari a produrli, come salari e stipendi dei dipendenti pubblici, acquisti di beni e servizi, costi di funzionamento, manutenzione e gestione.
4️⃣ Scambi con l’estero: Export e Import
Il PIL vuole misurare ciò che viene prodotto nel Paese. Per questo si aggiunge ciò che produciamo e vendiamo all’estero (export) e si sottrae ciò che compriamo da fuori (import).
Formula (semplificata):
PIL = Consumi + Investimenti + Servizi pubblici + (Export − Import)
Nota: questa è una formula divulgativa per capire le componenti. Nei conti nazionali esistono dettagli tecnici (prezzi, volumi, destagionalizzazioni, ecc.) che qui non servono per afferrare il concetto.
3) Tabella riepilogativa
Per chiudere il quadro, ecco una tabella semplice con le quote indicative (ordine di grandezza) delle principali componenti. Le percentuali possono variare nel tempo: qui servono per “vedere” la struttura.

Attenzione (molto importante):
- Il PIL non è “il fatturato totale di tutte le aziende”. Evita i doppi conteggi: conta il valore finale.
- Se compri un bene importato, entra nei consumi ma viene poi “neutralizzato” dall’import: il PIL vuole contare ciò che è prodotto qui.
4) Cosa NON misura il PIL
Anche quando il PIL cresce, questo non significa automaticamente che la vita migliori. Il PIL non misura:
- felicità
- benessere
- qualità della vita
- distribuzione della ricchezza
- lavoro domestico non retribuito
- impatto ambientale
Il PIL è un conto utile… ma non racconta tutta la storia.
Capire cosa misura (e cosa no) è il primo passo per leggere i numeri senza farsi trascinare dagli slogan.
